NORTHERN Grampians Shire chief executive Brent McAlister still remembers the smell of the park bench. More than 40 years ago, as he was beginning university, he spent a night on a park bench above a sewer pump station. “That was my first foray into homelessness,” he said.

Northern Grampians Shire chief executive Brent McAlister took part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Melbourne on Thursday night, helping raise money for homelessness services while reflecting on his own brief experience of homelessness more than 40 years ago.
