A message from Ararat Mayor Cr Bob Sanders

There is a great deal to be proud of in our local business community, and this year’s East Grampians Business Awards have given us another reminder of that.

We received a record 57 entries across the award categories, along with a record response of more than 1,100 votes for the People’s Choice Award. It is terrific to see so many businesses putting themselves forward, and so many residents taking the time to support them.

To me, those figures say something important about our region. We have motivated, innovative people who are prepared to back themselves, try something different and put in the hard work needed to build a successful business.

Just as importantly, we have a community that values what they do.

I would like to congratulate Black & Ginger Wines on being named Business of the Year, as well as winning the Future Ready Business and Made Here awards. Their approach to growing their business, welcoming visitors and working with other local businesses is a terrific example of what can be achieved here.

Congratulations also to The Mess & Barracks on winning the People’s Choice Award. Being recognised by your own customers and community is something to be very proud of.

Our other winners, including Kerrie’s Kreations, Ararat Turf Club, Laneway Pilates and Barkly Street Dental, demonstrate the variety of businesses and experiences we have close to home.

I also want to acknowledge every entrant, along with the sponsors and everyone who helped make the awards possible. Taking the time to enter is an opportunity to reflect on your achievements, and all entrants deserve credit for their contribution to our municipality.

Of course, the benefits of a thriving business community extend well beyond the businesses themselves.

Local businesses provide employment, give our young people opportunities and offer the goods, services and experiences that residents rely on. They help make our towns welcoming, active places where people want to live, work and spend time.

With Christmas approaching, there is no better time for us to show our support.

It can be tempting to order everything online or head to a bigger city to do the Christmas shopping. Before you do, I encourage you to have a look at what is available locally.

A gift from a local shop, a voucher, a locally made product or a meal out can all make a thoughtful present. Shopping locally is also a chance to enjoy a conversation and discover something you might otherwise have missed.

Whether you are shopping in Ararat, Pomonal, Willaura, Moyston, Lake Bolac or one of our smaller communities, your support matters.

Our business owners are investing their time, energy and ideas in this region. This Christmas, let’s back that effort by making local our first choice.
