A message from Cr Murray Emerson

Over the past few weeks there has been some very concerning publicity in relation to community safety in the Northern Grampians Shire region.

As Victoria Police is currently investigating an isolated incident in Stawell – and has charged some juveniles – I am unable to comment on this alleged behaviour.

However, I can say that Victoria Police is tasked with the responsibility of administering the law as a means of keeping our communities safe.

I am sure officers do this to the best of their ability and resources.

I encourage all residents to report any information they might have about crimes to your local police station.

There are several options for reporting. You can make a confidential report to Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au/report-a-crime/.

You can report a non-urgent crime to Victoria Police by calling the Police Assistance Line on 131 444 or make an online report at www.police.vic.gov.au/police-assistance-line-and-online-reporting.

In a case of emergency, always call Triple Zero.

Police officers are the ones who are equipped to deal with criminal behaviour. It seems to me this is a growing problem throughout Victoria.

It is important to remember that council is not the responsible authority for criminal offences.

We will, however, assist police and the community to the best of our ability.

Having 30 years of policing experience, I know that maintaining a safe and orderly community can be complex.

At the end of the day, we all have a role to play in keeping our community safe.

I encourage you to promote law-abiding standards and to report criminal behaviour to police.

On a more positive note, your council has been working diligently on behalf of residents in the lead-up to November’s State Election.

We have been in contact with all parties, advocating for the best outcomes for our region.

Hopefully there might be some exciting outcomes to announce soon – watch this space.

It’s great to see our farming country looking so good, as our farming friends have had a pretty difficult time over the past couple of years dealing with alternative energy and transmission line projects.

Let's hope we can get a reasonable outcome sooner rather than later.

On November 10, council will host a statutory meeting for the election of mayor. The meeting will be at the Council Chamber, Pleasant Creek Historic Precinct, Stawell at 6pm and is open to the public.

In closing, remember: “If you aren't looking for a solution, you may be part of the problem."
