The Pacing Cup shapes as a highlight of the evening, boasting a strong field packed with class and depth.

Local star Kerryn Manning had been set to feature in the Cup with Jet Rock, but the gelding was a late scratching.

Jet Rock, who missed two years with a front tendon injury, had only recently returned from a lengthy spell and posted two encouraging fourth placings. However, a veterinary examination on Wednesday ruled him out of tonight’s feature.

While disappointed, Manning was philosophical and will still have six drives across the eight-race program.

“He was fine on Tuesday, but on Wednesday morning was a little bit proppy, so I got him checked out to be safe rather than sorry, and unfortunately, he won’t be able to race tonight,” Manning said.

“I still have six drives on the day, and they are not bad drives. No morals, but they should go alright and hopefully do a good job.”

Manning identified Meteor Moth as the horse to beat in the Cup. The classy pacer is nearing peak fitness after two runs back from a six-month break and, despite drawing the second row, looms as a major threat.

“Meteor Moth is a class runner, but the draw makes it a little tough,” she said.

“Sanchez gets in well with the draw and is a bit of an up-and-comer. Pesci and Golden Tribe will also get their opportunities.”

Pesci and Golden Tribe have also drawn the second row, while Madigan adds further depth to the contest. If Sanchez can find the front, it would give him a significant advantage over the back markers on the tight Ararat circuit.

Of Manning’s six drives, Our Ultimate Gracy in race eight shapes as one of her strongest chances. The mare has won her past two starts following a spell and looks well placed to continue her rise through the grades.

“She has performed well lately, and each time she wins, she goes up a grade,” Manning said.

“It’s a strong field, but she has good gate speed, and if you can get to the front on the Ararat track, it’s a big help. She will be in the mix.”

Meanwhile, Michael Bellman does not have a drive in either feature, but he has four engagements across the program, each capable of making an impact on a night set to showcase some of the region’s best harness racing talent.
