Avoca set to open Barking Owl Arts Festival
AVOCA Community Arts and Gardens will open their ‘Barking Owl Arts Festival’ tonight at the Avoca Town Hall. The Avoca Art Show and Sale will officially launch from 6:30pm, showcasing the creativity and talent of local artists, as well as emerging young artists from local schools.
A section of the hall will be dedicated to artwork created by Waubra, Landsborough, Avoca, Moonambel and Natte Yallock primary schools, who have each contributed a set of murals celebrating a threatened or endangered species from the Pyrenees region.
Avoca Community Arts and Gardens member Hugh Forster said the schools have embraced the challenge.
“I have to take my hat off to the art teacher who thought up the concept. All the kids had a little hand in doing something. We thought murals would be a better way for the schools to participate. I think this is fantastic. The quality of the artwork is incredible.”
Mr Forster said Avoca Primary Schools art teacher Suzanne Blackie has been the driving force behind the participation of schools across the Pyrenees.
Tomorrow from midday, artist and calligrapher Stuart Slater will demonstrate his calligraphy skills in the foyer of the Avoca Town Hall as part of the art show.
Mr Slater will also run a small competition, offering a painting kit prize to the person who correctly answers the question: “Which two letters of the alphabet form the basis for all other letters of the alphabet?”
The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the art show.
The official launch will be held at 6.30pm tonight at the Avoca Town Hall.
The exhibition will be open Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
