STAWELL’s annual orchid show has continued to impress visitors with over 200 people attending over the Grand Final weekend.
STAWELL’s annual orchid show has continued to impress visitors with over 200 people attending last Friday and Saturday.
Normally held over three days over the Grand Final weekend, a scheduling issue meant the Stawell Orchid Society was limited to a two day show at the Stawell Town Hall.
But the shorter than expected show brought a sea of colour to the hall, with hundreds of magnificent orchids at their peak.
The theme of this year’s show was ‘birds in the bush’ and those exhibiting their orchids found a number of creative ways to display their prized blooms.
Stawell Orchid Society President Anne Gardiner said it was an extremely successful weekend which sparked a lot of interest.
“There were around 200 people through the doors and considering it was just two days, and one of them was the grand final, it was pretty good.
“Normally we have a three day show but there was a hiccup booking (the last day),” she said.
Ms Gardiner said the feedback from visitors was very encouraging.
“It’s always very positive, they are always amazed. Jack Blake, our councillor, he hadn’t been to one before even though he’s a Stawell man. He knew what an orchid was and had seen them grown but he was really blown away,” she said.
The Stawell Orchid Society also held two potting workshops over the weekend showing people how successfully repot orchids when they get too big.
Ms Gardiner said the show was the culmination of a lot of hard work by members of her committee.
“We have a wonderful committee of eight people. They all pitch in to make the show a success,” she said.
“We also had people come from Melbourne, Bendigo and Kerang to help us judge our exhibits. They did a wonderful job,” Ms Gardiner said.
