Last month, he won the Melbourne Championships, which is a local tournament, and recently won Savage Grappling, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event.

Bywater is a martial arts head coach and trains at Elite Contender in Stawell and Infinite MNA in Ballarat, and his passion for the sport is immense.

“I love the sport, I love the culture, and if there is something on, I’ll do it and put effort into it,” he said.

“I look at the medal wall when I walk into the gym, and they are all mine, about forty of them, and I am passionate.”

“I took about six months off with my partner having a baby, and my focus was outside of training.”

Speaking of training, Bywater explained his training schedule.

“If I don’t have a competition or have just come off one, I might put in six or seven hours a week, which is a combination of cardio training and time on the mats,” he said.

“When I am getting ready for a competition, I will train 18-20 hours a week, as I have to.

“If you don’t take it serious you don’t unlock your full potential, and that is what dawned on me. If you want to be the best in the world, you have to train like it.”

Bywater has two events coming up and has his eyes on September next year, the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC).

“There is a competition in Adelaide in four weeks and one in Melbourne in three weeks, and I will aim to do one, if not both,” he said.

“The ADCC is the largest competition in the world, and I went last year and finished with, which was a good result.”

“I will stay on the local circuit for a few months and stay sharp and stay in shape,” he said.

“It’s a bit of a wild thing from anyone from Stawell to try and aim for, and it’s now or never.”
