Celebrating educators who make a difference
ARARAT 800's Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program recognised OSHC Educators' Day recently, recognising the educators who support local children from all schools, before and after school and throughout the holidays.
Delivered by the Y Ballarat, the Ararat OSHC program provides a range of activities designed around children's interests, including creative arts, cooking, sport, science, outdoor adventures and quiet spaces where children can relax and spend time with friends.
Operating before and after school, the service helps local families balance work and other commitments, while school holiday programs offer excursions, incursions and a variety of activities to keep children engaged.
Nominated Supervisor Ash Doehnert, who has been with the program for five years, said building relationships with the children was the most rewarding part of the role.
“Their personalities are so unique,” Ash said. “They're the best part. You can connect with everyone, and you can really make a difference.”
Ash said it was rewarding to see children genuinely wanting to attend the program.
“I see the kids are wanting to be here,” Ash said. “We are trying to build a little more of a community within it as well, which has been really good,” Ash said.
Programs are planned each week, with the children helping to shape what activities are offered. “We do a program but it's all children's voices, children's interests is what we build around,” said Ash.
“They can dictate what they want in the room like art, relaxation, building, construction.”
Alongside providing fun and engaging activities, the team also places a strong focus on social development.
“With a focus on respect the team have worked on conflict resolution and how to self-regulate,” Ash said.
Acting OSHC Area Director Michelle McMahon praised the Ararat team for the relationships they have built with local families.
“Ash and the Ararat OSHC team have built wonderful relationships with the children; they give them the time and attention needed so the children feel safe and listened to,” Ms McMahon said.
“The team involve children in building their program and making decisions, so the children have a real sense of belonging and being respected.”
