Christians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus
CHRISTIANS from different denominations gathered in the Alexandra Gardens on Easter Friday for the annual Stations of the Cross. The walk through the gardens enables Christians to engage actively with the path of suffering walked by Jesus.
The annual walk is organised by Father Martin Nadarajan and is open to all Christians from the local community.
It originated when early Christians visited Jerusalem and wanted to follow literally in the footsteps of Jesus, tracing the path from Pilate’s house to Calvary.
Along the walk, they pause for prayer and devotion at various points.
Eventually those pilgrims brought the practice back to their home countries and ever since then, Christians of differing traditions have used this form of devotion.
Father Nadarajan said around 80 people attended last Friday’s walk.
“We’ve been doing this the last three years and it has increased in numbers every year. We had people from all of the denominations, at least one person from every denomination,” he said.
Father Nadarajan said the Stations of the Cross is an important journey for many people each Easter.
“A lot of us cannot afford to go to the holy land, especially with what is happening now. That’s the reason why Saint Francis brought the Stations of the Cross and it is important for us to revisit it every year so we know what Jesus went through and his love for us.
“The other thing is, this year we had a lot of younger people. We are finding more and more younger people are coming back to church,” he said
