Clippers, cheers and community spirit

STUDENTS at Ararat College went under the clippers this week as part of the World’s Greatest Shave, raising $2633 to support cancer research and patient care. Keiran Savoia and Hannah Dowsett took centre stage in the school gym on Monday, cheered on by classmates, family and staff as their long locks were cut.

Joining them in solidarity was teacher Justin Chilver, who shaved off the beard he has sprouted for the past decade.

Ararat College teacher Josh Barrie, who was originally going under the chop, said staff had set a fundraising target ahead of the event.

“The rule we had between the staff was that if we raised over $2,500, Mr Chilver was going to shave his head, I mean, his beard,” he joked when addressing the crowd.

As the first cuts were made, Mr Barrie reminded students of the impact their efforts would have.

“The hair we cut today will be used for making wigs for people who are going through cancer treatment,” he said.

Mr Chilver said the cause was close to his heart.

“It’s a good cause, helping to support the students who have been pretty brave and courageous to do what they do. They all got reasons behind why they’ve done it. My old man passed away from cancer about seven years ago so it’s always something to support,” he said.

“It’s great the two students had the courage to lose their hair.”
