Community gathers in Tatyoon to discuss Ballyrogan Wind Farm proposal
THE Ballyrogan and Tatyoon communities came together last Friday for an information session with Viva-Lyn Lenehan, founder of Wind Farm Living and representative from the Moyne Shire, to discuss the progress and impacts of the proposed Ballyrogan Wind Farm by Squadron Energy. The session, hosted by the Ballyrogan and Tatyoon Community Alliance (BaTCA), aimed to educate locals on the evolving project and the implications for residents and landowners.
Ms Lenehan shared her experience with wind farm developments across the region, drawing on her work in Moyne Shire where similar projects have been established. She encouraged residents to become informed and proactive when reviewing proposals and contracts. “This is a community information, education and training meeting, not an objection meeting,” Ms Lenehan said. “I quickly realised that the wind industry uses the same playbook. You have to ask yourself before you sign anything: how much is the health of your family worth?”
In recent weeks, Squadron Energy announced major revisions to the project, reducing its size and increasing the setback distance between turbines and neighbouring properties to a minimum of two kilometres, unless otherwise agreed.
Local landowner Jo Armstrong said residents are seeking transparency. “We do have some really pertinent issues that need to be aired, and we’re all about trying to share information,” she said. “We are very critical of Squadron Energy’s failure to engage authentically with our community. It might not feel like much is happening, but we are making a difference.”
Ms Lenehan also spoke about potential legal, health and environmental concerns linked to wind farm developments, highlighting the importance of clear written agreements and understanding potential caveats or restrictions on land titles. “You have to look after yourselves, your land and your family,” she told attendees.
