Council considers camp site changes
PYRENEES Shire Council has indicated it is willing to consider a change to the conditions placed on travellers staying at Beaufort’s free RV camp site.
The camp site is located next to the Apex Clubrooms in Audus Lane and currently restricts travellers to a 24 hour stay.
Beaufort’s business chamber Business for Beaufort wrote to council in February asking for it to change the time limit from 24 to 72 hours.
The group argued that allowing travellers to stay longer would benefit local businesses like cafes, hotels and other shops.
Last week, councils Manager of Economic Development and Tourism Ray Davies met with the group and indicated council would be open to a change.
“They (council) say someone needs to apply for changes to be made so they can amend the camp site permit so we will be discussing the issue at our next meeting.
“It’s likely we will submit an application after we have met,” he said.
Mr Johnston said B4B was also trying to get council to agree to other improvements at the camp site.
“We’d like to get some better signage showing travellers what we have in town, promoting Radio 88, letting them know where they can get a sandwich or a parma or some hardware.
“There needs to be a large sign showing what we have instead of people having to google it.”
Mr Johnston is also hopeful that council will eventually allow people to use above ground fire pits at the site.
“We’ve lost out on that one so far but we’ll have another crack at that issue again down the track.”
In their meeting, Mr Davies also indicated that council is attending to some drainage issues at the camp site.
“The surface that’s there now is not suitable, it turns to mud too quickly, it needs a better surface and that will cost a few dollars.”
“But the fact council is looking at improvements is positive,” Mr Johnston said.
