Group founder Kristie Leitch said the initiative was created to help local carers build connections and support one another, with Carers Victoria quickly coming on board to support the event. “I was previously in Craigieburn, and I was heavily involved in the Hume Carers Group, and then we moved out here, and there was no group for the Pyrenees Shire,” she said.

Previously with the Hume group Kristie was able to take part in walks, green thumb style activities and coffee catch ups she explained. “Now I'm creating an Avoca/Pyrenees experience. We are just starting off with once-a-month coffee and chats.”

Ms Leitch said she wanted to create a similar support network for carers in the region, saying the group welcomes carers from all backgrounds, including those caring for people living with dementia, disability, illness or age-related needs.

She said one of the biggest benefits of connecting with other carers was speaking with people who understood the challenges firsthand.

“Being able to know there are people out there feeling what you're feeling, I've got special needs kids, so people who don't understand what it's like to have special needs kids, it's hard to have a conversation with them, but when you find someone else who has special needs kids they can say, ‘Have you tried this?’ and it's not coming from a therapist who's just reading off a text book,” she said. “It's coming from a person who's living it.”
