Dean Morris’ Portrait Project captures the soul of Beaufort

FOR Beaufort local Dean Morris, photography has always been about more than just taking pictures. It is about telling stories and preserving the character of a place.

Beaufort resident Dean Morris is working on an in-depth project that captures the stories and essence of Beaufort.

Dean is working on a project close to his heart, The Weight of Men, a series of portraits capturing the faces and stories of the men who have helped shape Beaufort.

From farmers who rise with the sun to tradesmen and volunteers who give their time without recognition, these are the people who have quietly kept this small but proud town thriving.

"Every town has its keepers of memory," Dean said.

"The men I have photographed are the ones who have put in the work to make Beaufort what it is today. I wanted to capture not just their faces, but the lives and experiences behind them."

The portraits are bold yet intimate, drawing the viewer in with their simplicity and depth.

Each image reflects a life lived with purpose, and each will be accompanied by a written story.

Together they will form a book that serves as both a tribute and a historical record of Beaufort.

"Living here has shown me how important connection and belonging really are," Dean explains.

"These men are not just faces in front of a camera. They are storytellers, role models, and an important part of Beaufort’s backbone."

The finished book, The Weight of Men, will feature around 50 to 60 portraits alongside personal stories.

Dean hopes it will inspire conversations about community, resilience, and the value of those who have dedicated their lives to making Beaufort what it is.

Dean is still looking for a few more locals to be part of the project. If you or someone you know has a story worth sharing, he would love to hear from you.
