Dean Morris’s New project ‘The Strength of Women’ begins

FOLLOWING the sell-out success of The Weight of Men, Beaufort photographer, Dean Morris has already begun a new six-month journey to create its companion piece, The Strength of Women. The project launched just last week and has already sparked extraordinary community interest. More than 50 local women have reached out to take part.

“The reaction from socials has been incredible,” Dean said.

“I am aiming for 200. I didn’t expect it to come that quickly, they see the worth of the book and what it does to the community. I think it brings the community together and gets them talking about something good.”

Dean hopes to have the book completed in time for Mother’s Day.

“I want to get it out in six months in time for Mother’s Day. That’s the aim anyway.”

He said it is important to shine a spotlight on local women.

“They need to be celebrated as well for everything they’ve done in the community, it’s not just the men.”

Locals have already suggested future collections focusing on volunteers and youth.

“This could go on and on and on,” Dean said.

“For the moment, I’ll concentrate on the women, it’ll be too big to put in one book. So it’ll be volume one and volume two out at the same time.”

Dean said he expects strong participation.

“I don’t think we’re going to have that much of a problem getting the 200. If we get more, we get more, I’ll just keep taking them until I have to stop, to produce the book. At the moment I’m just overwhelmed with the number of women who’ve come forward and said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to be part of it.’”

He said the project will also honour Beaufort’s history, serving as a reminder of those women who helped build Beaufort to what it is today.

“At least we’ve been able to capture a bit of their story and their photo so they’re not forgotten.”

Dean said the stories from women will take a different direction from his previous project.

“I’m moving away from the sort of questions I asked with the men, to a more deep and meaningful thing for the women, and I think that will bring out more of their story. I think the stories will be nice, nice and varied. I think it’s their opportunity to tell their own story.”
