Doors are open at Moyston
THE heart of Moyston is beating once again, with the Moyston General Store reopening this week under new owners Heshan Ilukkumbure and Kirstie Scott. Former owner Julie-Ann Rose, who closed the doors in August, has returned temporarily to help the couple settle in and share the ins and outs of running the much-loved local hub. Heshan and Kirstie, first-time business owners, have traded the coast for the country, making the move from Phillip Island to Moyston.
Both come from hospitality backgrounds and say they’ve already been warmly welcomed by the community.
“We were looking to buy something, looking everywhere, and then we found the ad for this place,” Heshan said.
“We thought this is actually pretty nice. The locals have been really nice, they are on a first-name basis here so we were amazed.”
The couple plans to continue some of the store’s cherished traditions.
“Julie-Ann used to do Saturday night dinners, so we might start that up again,” Heshan said.
Kirstie said the pair have had a busy but rewarding start.
“It’s been pretty busy, it’s been great. Once we get to know the kitchen and the rhythm of doing it we will be fine. Our biggest worry is probably not meeting Julie-Ann’s standards, she obviously built something pretty good.”
Julie-Ann said she couldn’t be happier to see the store reopen and thrive again.
“It hasn’t been very long, so I’m absolutely wrapped because that was the hardest thing, deciding it was time for me to go, leaving the community,” she said.
“It was a really important place for connection and so I was wrapped when they found me. They are the most beautiful couple, they are so sweet and lovely. And planning to be here long term. The community so far, so many have been coming in, and they feel so welcome. I honestly couldn’t be happier.”
The Moyston General Store is open every day from 8am to 4pm, ready once again to serve locals and visitors alike with good food and friendly faces.
