Ararat and District Aeromodellers Club is one of Ararat’s success stories.

It boasts a healthy membership of 25 members and is an open and welcoming club for people who have an interest in flying model planes.

Members come from across the region to join in the comradery and fly their planes with other likeminded members.

The club is keen to boost numbers and is hoping some younger resident may join their ranks over the coming year.

Committee member Rick Pimblot told the Ararat Advocate people can come along to the club’s headquarters on Warrak Road and get a chance to fly a model plane before they commit.

“We do have a trainer aircraft with a buddy box system where can give people a go if they come out,” he said.

“If someone wants to fly, we would prefer they come out and talk to us first before they go and buy anything so we can make sure they get the right aircraft to start with,” he said.

“We have around 25 members and we would like to grow the club a little bit but we are comfortable.

“We have members from Ararat, Melbourne and Geelong. Some of our members are members of multiple clubs and we are here on Sundays and on Wednesdays for retirees,” Rick said.

The club says it limits participation to five aircraft in the air at any one time to avoid mid-air collisions and complies to all CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) rules and regulations.

The club is staging its main event of the year on the 15 th and 16 th of November and members of the Ararat community are invited to participate.

The “MossKosk” Annual Fun Fly is named after the club’s beloved past president Moss Heard and provides a fun and inclusive day for model aeroplane enthusiasts of all ages.

The day runs from daylight to dusk and registration of planes is $10 each.

“The MossKosh will bring around 50 pilots from clubs everywhere, Melbourne, Geelong and Mount Gambier,” Rick said.

The Ararat field is regarded as one of the best in Victoria and there is ample space for people attending MossKosh to view aircraft as well as camp on site.
