JANE Douglass’ introduction to netball is unlike that of her teammates’.
Asked to fill-in by her friends who were playing netball at Waubra at the time, Douglass, who was playing basketball at the time, never looked back; discovering a passion for both the club and the game, which has seen her quickly become a key cog in the heart of the A-Grade team.
A fortnight ago Douglass, celebrated a special milestone when she ran out for the 150th time in Waubra colours.
“I honestly didn’t realise I had played that many games,” she said.
“I used to come and watch my friends play for Waubra and ended up filling in a few times, because I was playing basketball.
“There were a few technical things that I had to adjust to in terms of leading and drives and what not, but I found netball so much more enjoyable.
“I think it’s easier going from basketball to netball rather than the other way around. It wasn’t too hard I found stepping the hardest issue, because in basketball you can take the extra step.”
A one club player and now captain of A-Grade side, Douglass says it was the “community and social side” of the game which won her over after growing up playing basketball.
“You often spend your whole Saturday at the game which I love, whereas in basketball you just go for your game and that’s it and there are no functions or social events afterwards,” she said.
“I love the vibe and the feel going out every Saturday and the Waubra family and being part of it.”
Douglass leads one of the youngest teams in the Central Highlands Netball League, with Waubra filling its senior side with several graduates from its junior ranks.
“We’re a very young team and it’s been really nice because the girls are willing to listen and improve. Their effort has been amazing which has been really helpful for me in my position as a captain,” Douglass said.
