Grampians paramedic calls time on 50-year career

WHEN Ian Jones first climbed into the back of an ambulance, he was 17 years old and did not yet have his driver’s licence. He could not sit behind the wheel, so he was sent straight into the part of the job where there was nowhere to hide — beside the patient, on the way to hospital, learning in real time what fear, pain, birth, death and survival looked like. Fifty years later, after a working life that carried him from Geelong to Werribee, Melbourne, Mackay and finally Stawell, Mr Jones is preparing to hang up the uniform that shaped almost his entire adult life.
