Grant-funded workshop boosts leadership skills for Avoca youth
YOUNG leaders in the Avoca community were recently helped to develop their leadership skills at a workshop at Avoca RTC. Avoca Riverside Market successfully received a Volunteer Skill Development Grant allowing it to facilitate a workshop involving young market volunteers as well as leaders from Avoca Primary School.
The Youth Empowerment Manager from Western Bulldogs Community Foundation Maggie Toohey ran the successful session with a lot of positive feedback.
During the session, participants explored the value of volunteering, the positive impact it has on their local community, and their own motivations for getting involved.
The young people also discussed the leadership qualities they value most and set personal goals to work towards throughout their volunteering journey.
Ms Toohey facilitated discussion on key reasons why people volunteer.
So that events can still take place
To make new connections
Good for mental health
The more people that get involved, the more that can happen/gets done

“The group left the workshop feeling optimistic about the year ahead and enthusiastic about continuing to support their local community,” Ms Toohey said.
Following the two hour session, participants enjoyed a meal and informal chats.
Avoca Riverside Market Committee said the leadership workshop was a great way to support the young volunteers who give up their time each month to assist with the market by welcoming visitors and collecting data.
“It was lovey meeting the group last Friday - such a great bunch. Thanks for having me, really enjoyed my time,” Ms Toohey said.
