Horsham-Grampians United show fight in friendly

The combined Horsham Falcons and Grampians United Soccer Clubs squad produced a mixed but encouraging performance in their second pre-season friendly, taking on a strong Ballarat side, Vic Park Vultures, as both clubs continue preparations for the upcoming Wimmera & Northern Grampians Soccer League season.

The first half proved challenging for the newly assembled squad, with Vic Park taking control early through structured play and sharp finishing. The visitors went into the break leading 4–0.

With several new players featuring, and coaching structures still being implemented, the opening half was largely focused on player positioning, combinations, and building on-field understanding rather than results.

The second half told a very different story, with the Horsham–Grampians United side lifting intensity, organisation, and effort to match their opponents. The home side responded well, winning the half 2–1 in an improved and competitive display.

The highlight of the afternoon came from Horsham’s Jordan Turner, who produced a moment of outstanding individual skill. Collecting the ball just beyond halfway, Turner weaved through multiple defenders before calmly chipping the advancing Vic Park goalkeeper to score a superb solo goal.

The second goal arrived after a low, driven cross from Grampians United’s Welsey Nasey caused chaos inside the Vic Park penalty area, with the resulting deflection ricocheting into the net and ultimately ruled an own goal.

In the end, the Vultures won 5-2.

With the Wimmera & Northern Grampians Soccer League set to launch its historic first season, momentum is building across participating clubs. In recognition of the competition’s debut year, prize money has been confirmed.

Grampians United is also looking for senior men’s and women’s players as preparations intensify for the upcoming season.
