The Pyrenees Shire Council confirmed that several major milestones have been reached in recent weeks, marking a significant step forward in addressing the region’s worker housing shortage.

With six concrete slabs poured, five of the houses are now fully framed, with the sixth currently being completed.

The works form part of a dual development effort, with Council also planning a 24-lot subdivision at the same Burke Street site in addition to the current project of ten homes.

Pyrenees Shire Council Mayor Damian Ferrari said the accommodation project will help retain essential workers across the region.

“The Burke Street Key Worker Accommodation Project is vital for retaining key workers in the region, and providing housing options is an effective way to do this,” Cr Ferrari said.

“The project will also boost the local economy during the initial construction phase.”

Local builders Hotondo Homes Ararat and GJ Gardner Homes Ballarat are delivering the project.

Hotondo Homes Ararat Manager Russell Pearse said the development is designed to house a significant number of people while still providing privacy and flexibility.

“These will accommodate quite a few people,” he said.

“They are set up so that you have independent living by different groups of people.”

With four of the Hontondo houses currently underway in varying stages, Russell noted the project is a unique build for the company.

“It’s a bit different to what we normally do, but maybe there should be more of it.”

Once completed, the homes will offer a mix of two and three-bedroom layouts, providing rental options for both long-term and seasonal workers, including those in agriculture, healthcare, construction, and manufacturing.

The Pyrenees Shire Council has confirmed that the project remains on track for completion by 30 June 2026.
