Humour and print making at Avoca’s Gallery 127
COLIN Clark will open his first solo exhibition this weekend, bringing a mix of humour, experimentation and traditional techniques to Avoca’s Gallery 127. Demanding Proof, the exhibition showcases a collection of primarily linocut printmaking, featuring a wide range of styles and ideas developed across Colin’s practice.
Describing the process as both creative and therapeutic, Colin said printmaking offers a unique outlet as he spends hours carving. “It’s a very cathartic activity.”
The exhibition does not follow a single theme, instead presenting several different series of works. “It’s kind of everything, there are a few different series of work,” he said. “There’s the steampunk people, a series of plays on words with dog names, and some experimental techniques I’ve tried as well.”
Colin’s work is known for its distinctive character, humorous, quirky, and occasionally darker in tone, exploring a variety of concepts and visual styles.
Among the pieces are works inspired by old newspaper imagery. “Back in the day, newspaper pictures used to be made up of half-tone dots,” he said. “I was thinking back to those black and white pictures and seeing if I could recreate that.”
The exhibition also includes political satire and reimagined artworks and book covers, influenced by Soviet-era propaganda poster styles, alongside playful and imaginative concepts. “It might make a few people think,” Colin said.
While Colin has previously exhibited individual pieces, Demanding Proof marks the first time his work has been brought together in a single show. “It’s the first time I’ve seen it all laid out in one place and framed up,” he said. “This is the first solo show.”
The exhibition will officially open on Saturday, April 4, at 2pm and will run until April 27.
“I’m really excited, hopefully plenty of people come and have a look, and hopefully some of them like the art,” Colin said.
