Landsborough Post Office changes hands as a revitalised hub

LANDSBOROUGH is bringing community back to its centre, with locals Renee Peterson and Michael ‘Ned’ Kelly breathing new life into the local post office. Since taking over in October, the couple have been working hard to learn the ropes, following the departure of former post manager Sarah Shipcott.

“Everyone misses her very, very much,” Renee said of the former post manager.

When the opportunity arose, Renee said she jumped at the chance to take on the business, while Michael saw potential to use the space to sell fresh local eggs.

The pair underwent around three months of training before officially taking the reins and have since worked to gradually expand what the post office offers.

“Started making some sort of gradual changes and then a whole lot of changes,” Renee said.

Having lived in Landsborough for two years, Renee and Michael said supporting the community is at the heart of what they do.

“For us, being part of the community… after the café shut down there was nothing in town that had anything, so the goal is to stock things people might want,” Renee said.

The shop now includes a pie warmer, coffee machine, fridge and freezer, enabling them to stock more than just the basics, including frozen pizzas and other convenience foods.

“We’ve stocked it as much as we can with lots of foods that people might need, bread and eggs and milk, the essentials,” Renee said.

Michael said the goal is to create a place that people want to visit.

“Just trying to turn it into somewhere that people will actually come to get mail and go, ‘Oh, I need milk,’” he said, saving locals a trip to Ararat or Stawell.

“We’re not a grocery store. We are just trying to take care of what we can for the community and make sure that there’s stuff available for them.”

The pair understand that places like the local post office is a bit of a community spot where people catch up.

“It’s a bit of a community meeting spot for everything too, the amount of people that pull up a seat out the front just to chinwag,” Renee said. Michael said that the weekend trade is great for kids and those who can’t make it during the week.

“We are open Saturdays now, so people who can’t get in between 10 and 1 can come and pick up a package. We do a fair bit of trade with the kids on a Saturday, coming in for lollies, the pool’s about to open.”

The post office is now open Monday to Friday from 10am to 1pm, and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. Locals can also pick up copies of The Advocate and Stawell Times-News at the post office.
