Lexton motor sport plan revealed

THE tranquil surrounds of Lexton could soon be filled with the sounds of revving engines under a plan to build a motor sport complex next to the Lexton Cemetery. Plans have been submitted to Pyrenees Shire Council by the Ballarat Light Car Club to create the complex at a site at the corner of Cemetery and School Roads.

The club had been based next to Ballarat Airport for 45 years but was forced to move out in 2004 to make way for a runway extension.

The club held its last event at its former home near the airport in August, 2024 and since then has been working on the Lexton proposal.

The modest proposal would cost around $150,000 and would include two 1.7 kilometre tracks, two large motorkhana pads, an equipment shed, amenities building, a car park and a plant room.

In the proposal before Pyrenees Shire Council, the club says it will utilise 18 hectares of the 32 hectare site.

The site is 2.3 kilometres from Lexton township and the closest home is 680 metres to the west.

It is currently vacant of any buildings and there is a scattering of existing native vegetation with Doctors Creek running along the eastern side.

The application states “Cemetery Road is an all-weather access road which has open drains on both sides with vegetation locate on both

sides which is maintained by the Pyrenees Shire up to the southern end of the existing cemetery site.”

“The condition of the road passed (sic) the cemetery is a narrow all-weather road surface with existing vegetation located on sides.”

The development will include earthworks to create the two motor tracks, motorkana areas and the pads for the amenities building, toilets and the equipment shed.

The proposed facility will operate from 8am to 7pm on Sundays twice a month over an 11 month period.

Normally there are about 50 patrons on site, with up to 100 patrons at special meetings held twice a year.

The Pyrenees Advocate attempted to contact the club for comment without success.

But Club President Wayne Drew told ACM so far the club had enjoyed "support and acceptance of the local community" in their planning for the new complex.

"We're very positive but we want to make sure that we do everything correctly. This is the future of the Ballarat Light Car Club for the next 50+ years. We vacated, or were forced to vacate, the airport ... so we want to make sure we do this the correct way and work with the local community and Pyrenees Shire Council to achieve a good outcome for everybody," Mr Drew told ACM.
