A working group has been established to create a business plan and seek investors for a vision which proposes an information and discovery centre, cafe, accommodation, retail, education, cinema, playground and Big Vegemite.

This follows two forums which sought to determine if there was interest in growing the roadside museum into a world class tourist destination that told a great Australian story, helping future proof local businesses from highway bypass.

Museum manager Liza Robinson said the museum opened in 2023 when Vegemite celebrated its 100th anniversary and was now a four day a week operation which attracted visitors from at home and overseas and visits from international media.

Museum Manager Paul Callanan said the project represents a fantastic opportunity for our local community and a potential tourism hotspot.

“It’s a chance to showcase the unique character and beauty of our region to a wider audience. With the right capital investment and a clear path to returns, the project stands to deliver real economic benefit. A comprehensive feasibility study will ensure its viability,” he said.

Member for Western Victoria, Joe McCracken, who grew up in Beaufort, said he was fully behind growing the museum.

“The proposed big Vegemite is a big draw card which would put Beaufort on the map. I’m so proud to support this project, it would change the face of Beaufort and make it a fantastic tourist icon in Western Victoria,” he said.

Mayor Tanya Kehoe said council strongly supported plans to grow the museum that celebrates one of Australia’s most famous food inventions.

"Council is sure the new working group will make big things happen for the Cyril Callister Vegemite Museum, building on the success it has already had to date.

"Council is very happy to support initiatives that bring more visitors to our Shire, supporting the local economy and providing jobs for local people. We look forward to seeing what eventuates out of this exciting initiative,” Cr Kehoe said.

The Cyril Callister Vegemite Museum is run by the Cyril Callister Foundation which wants to spread the story of Dr Callister and encourage young Australians to study science.

The foundation also runs a scholarship program and a program which takes Dr Callister’s story into schools.
