Nature and history inspire new street names

PYRENEES Shire Council has turned to local flora and fauna to name three roads created by the Beaufort Key Worker Accommodation Project. The names, based on plants and animals impacted by the 2024 Bayindeen-Rocky Road fire, are: • Swift Street – after the swift parrot • Honeyeater Close – after the regent honeyeater • Falcon Terrace – after the black falcon

34 new housing blocks have been allocated in the parcel of land running between Burke Street and the railway line on the western side of Beaufort.

The first homes are currently under construction and have been funded by the Victoria and Federal Government’s to house workers wanting to relocate to the region.

An additional unnamed road off Hill and Callister streets in Beaufort is proposed to be named Mabel Court after Australian community leader and philanthropist Mabel Thomas, born in Beaufort in 1870.

During World War I, Mabel Thomas worked with the Red Cross and was also involved with the Australian Women’s National League and actively supported community causes, including free kindergartens.

A devoted supporter of charitable movements, Thomas combined leadership roles with community engagement throughout her life.

Councillors were given two choices for the unnamed road, the other being O’Connell Court after Catholic Sister, trade unionist and social worker Cecily Maude O’Connell, born in Beaufort in 1884.

Cr Megan Phelan backed the name Mabel Court.

“I know that both women have made extraordinary contributions and it’s fabulous to read about their history and they are both very worthy to have a court named after them,” she said.

Mayor Damian Ferrari said the new street names reflect Beaufort’s unique environment and history.

“These names acknowledge the significant impact of the Bayindeen fire on our local landscape and wildlife, while also recognising the importance of preserving and celebrating what makes our region special,” Cr Ferrari said.

“Council also encourages residents to review the proposed name of Mabel Court and provide feedback as part of the formal submission process.”

At its meeting on Monday night, Council also adopted a new Naming Policy, replacing its previous Principles on Road Naming.

The updated policy provides clearer guidance to ensure future road naming proposals are consistent, transparent and reflective of community values.

Community members can view the proposed name and lodge submissions by completing and submitting the “Road Naming Application” form available on Council’s website at pyrenees.vic.gov.au/Community/Roads/Road-naming

Submissions for the current road naming proposal close on 19 March 2026.
