New creative outlet for Pyrenees locals

CREATIVE locals will have a new opportunity to share their work, exchange ideas and connect with fellow writers with the launch of the Pyrenees Writers Group. The new group, launched by Pyrenees Community House, will welcome writers from across the district, whether they are working on a manuscript, memoir, children’s book or simply interested in putting pen to paper.

Community Engagement Officer Virginie Woolridge said the group would provide a supportive environment for writers to share their experiences and receive constructive feedback.

“It’s a club to get together, share their skills, their experiences, vent about how hard it is to be published,” she said.

The group is open to writers of all experience levels, with Virginie encouraging anyone with an interest in writing to attend.

“You don’t have to be an established writer, you can just be interested in writing,” she said.

The group will also provide an opportunity for writers to gain a different perspective on their work.

“Sometimes you need a reader’s angle,” Virginie said. “You can be stuck in your storyline and you don’t realise the reader’s angle is a different one.”

The group hopes to draw on the district’s existing creative community, with plans to invite writers to speak to members and share their experiences.

“There are quite a lot of creatives in this community, a lot of books have already been published, so we are hoping we’ll be able to reach out to some of these people and see if they want to come and talk to them every now and then and give them a bit of inspiration,” she said.

Virginie said the response to the group’s launch had already been encouraging.

“We’ve gotten some great feedback already on social media, hopefully it’ll take off,” she said.

Pyrenees Community House manager Malcolm Sanders said the region had a strong support for the creative arts.

“It is a creative community. They do it at this really interesting grassroots level which I find quite interesting.”

The Pyrenees Writers Group will meet on the last Saturday of each month, commencing August 29, from 2pm to 4pm in the Trafford Room at the back of Beaufort Library.

Annual membership for the group has been set at $25.
