At last week’s council meeting, councillors discussed the proposed names Kathleen Street and Rose Mary Way.

Earlier this year, council sought public opinion on the naming of the two streets.

Kathleen Street was a previously unnamed road which runs between Homebush Road and Station Street.

Councillors were told the name Kathleen Street is a legitimate naming option and passes all of the tests set by the Registrar of Geographic Names and supports the Victorian Government’s Gender Equity Strategy 2023-2027.

The name has a historical relationship to the area, being the first name of Kathleen Walker who served as a Nurse in World War 1.

It is named after Rose Mary Walker, the sister of Kathleen Walker, who also served as a nurse in World War 1.

The proposed names of both streets were advertised in the Pyrenees Advocate and on council’s website where descendants of the two women were invited to make comment.

To complete the naming process a name needs to be formally adopted by Council along with the recommendation to forward a report to the Registrar of Geographic Names for consideration of the names Kathleen Street and Rose Mary Way.

All councillors agreed to the new names.
