New venture to rebuild Warrak playground

THE Warrak Recreation Reserve committee is calling on the community for support as it works to rebuild its playground and improve facilities for families, visitors and locals. The much-loved playground was recently decommissioned after it no longer met current safety standards. The loss has been felt widely, with the reserve regularly used by families, campers, car clubs and travellers passing through the close-knit community. With just six weeks to raise funds, the committee says the pressure is on.

“We are trying to raise as much money as we possibly can,” said Daniel Buckingham from the Warrak Recreation Reserve committee.

The group has set a $10,000 target to strengthen its application for a Tiny Towns Grant, funding that could significantly expand what is possible for the site.

“We’d love to get to ten thousand, because then that’s going to be able to build a better area for the kids,” Daniel said.

He said the project isn’t just about play equipment.

“The biggest thing is not only is it for the kids, but the parents can take their kids down to the playground and play, but also parents can catch up as well.”

Daniel said they are open to ideas for fundraising but the final design will depend on funding.

Committee member Sally Buckingham said if funding is tight, the initial upgrade may focus on equipment for five- to eight-year-olds, with plans to expand later.

“Ideally you want one thing that covers from two to twelve years old. If we don’t get the grant, the money we raise, we will buy a seesaw or a swing,” Sally said.

“We’ve committed to putting something there.”

The committee has already secured grants for a new water tank, new picnic table seating and an electric barbecue set to arrive in early 2026.

Donations are encouraged to kick-start the project, with contributions accepted online or via direct deposit by visiting the reserves GoFundMe page at https://gofund.me/46f1cddd7 or through direct deposit.
