Packed church marks World Day of Prayer
A packed St Peter’s Lutheran Church and clear autumn weather set the scene for a successful World Day of Prayer service in Stawell, raising nearly $1,000 to support people in need in Nigeria. The service, held on Friday, March 6, brought together members of churches from across the town for the annual international event, which this year was prepared by women in Nigeria.
Local organiser Lorraine Simpkin said the afternoon drew a strong turnout and reflected the spirit of cooperation between Stawell’s churches.
“A large crowd of women and men met at St Peters Lutheran Church on Friday 6th March for the World Day of Prayer service,” she said.
“All churches in Stawell were represented and took reading parts in the service.”
The program included a guest address from Mrs Joy Obi, who recently returned from Nigeria and spoke about life in the country and the challenges faced by many women there.
“Our guest speaker was Mrs Joy Obi, who gave a wonderful inspirational talk about life in Nigeria, and the difficulties that many women face,” Mrs Simpkin said.
“There are many people living in poverty.”
Music was also a highlight of the afternoon, with the congregation enjoying the traditional organ sounds.
“The organist was Mrs Bronwyn Tiddy, and the singing was really wonderful,” Mrs Simpkin said.
A total of $981.45 was raised during the service, with the funds to be sent to the Bible Society in Nigeria to support people experiencing hardship.
“The amount of money raised was $981.45 which will be sent to the Bible Society in Nigeria, to support the poor and needy people there,” Mrs Simpkin said.
Following the service, attendees stayed for afternoon tea prepared by members of the Lutheran congregation.
“A wonderful afternoon tea, prepared by the Lutheran ladies, was served after the service.”
Mrs Simpkin said next year’s event would carry special significance, with 2027 marking 100 years of the World Day of Prayer through the Bible Society.
“This special celebration will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in March 2027,” she said.
