Roundabouts funded to improve road safety
SEVERAL new roundabouts are to be constructed in Stawell as part of the Victorian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Streets program.
Across Victoria, $210 million will be given to local councils to develop, design and deliver safety upgrades on local roads, intersections and precincts.
In Stawell, funding has been granted for a roundabout and raised priority crossing at the Barnes Street, Clifton Avenue and Frayne Street intersection.
Funding has also been approved for several roundabouts in Ligar Street.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said the funding will allow local councils to deliver a range of upgrades to improve safety on local roads including pedestrian crossings, intersection upgrades and speed-calming measures.
Local governments manage 87 per cent of Victoria’s roads and the program supports the development and delivery of road safety infrastructure projects on these roads that many people use every day for travelling to school, work and around the local community.
Ms Horne said the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program will support councils capacities to plan, fund and deliver road safety improvements on local roads.
“We’ve funded more than 200 projects to help local councils to deliver safer streets where local communities needs them most,” she said.
TAC Chief Executive Officer Tracey Slatter said the funding will help councils deliver important road safety infrastructure on local roads.
“We know local governments are deeply committed to making their local roads safer, and this program is providing the much-needed investment needed to help councils prevent crashes and save lives in their local communities,” she said.
