THE Stawell Historical Society and Museum opened its doors to the Northern Grampians Shire Council on Monday, March 17, to share with the council what is happening to preserve Stawell’s long history.
Councillors Jenny Greenberger and Karen Probst, deputy mayor Justine Hide and mayor Karen Hyslop accepted the invitation and were led on a tour of the historical society’s archive and museum.
Cr Greenberger said the work being done by the historical society was brilliant.
“It’s so important that our history is retained,” she said.
“It’s so wonderful that there are so many passionate people here who are looking after it, getting it all digitised and working hard to create a really interesting display for people who want to come and learn about the area.”
The museum, which lives in the Pleasant Creek Court House next to the information centre, is full of pieces that tell different bits of Stawell’s history.
“It is excellent, well worth coming to have a look at,” said Cr Greenberger.
“When I first came into this courthouse precinct, [I noticed] it’s way bigger than you’d expect looking at it from the outside, and every room has got a little display in it about our history.
“[There are] some really interesting stories.”
The Stawell Historical Society and Museum, located at Longfield Street, is open to the public on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am until 4pm.
