Students and teachers set to take on Great Victorian Bike Ride
STAWELL Secondary College will field a team in the 2025 Great Victorian Bike Ride, which commences today. This year marks the first edition of the re-designed event, following speculation that the previous format had become too costly to operate. The revitalised “Great Vic” will span five days, covering 364 kilometres from Mortlake to Camperdown via Koroit and Port Campbell.
The College team will comprise 11 students from Years 7 to 11: Cooper Field, Tyson Field, Eden Croft, Nate Lyons, Scarlett Rimon, Lexi Gooden, Henry Albrecht, Liam Nicholson, Wil Johnston, Tom Jess, Edward Nelson supported by two staff members, Mr Jannik Koop and Ms Elizabeth Fox, both experienced cyclists who will be undertaking their first Great Vic ride.
Organised by Bicycle Network Victoria, the Great Victorian Bike Ride is a fun, friendly and challenging cycling and camping adventure.
Over the course of the five-day event, participants will ride 364 kilometres while developing school values of participation, aspiration, inclusion, resilience and respect.
As the largest fully supported bicycle event in the world, the “Great Vic” offers students an exceptional opportunity to experience regional Victoria while building confidence, teamwork skills and personal resilience. Completing the ride provides a significant sense of achievement that fosters personal growth.
The team has been training together since early August, initially riding once per week and recently increasing to twice-weekly rides of up to 50 kilometres.
While excitement is building as the event approaches, students and staff alike remain mindful of the challenges ahead.
Stawell Secondary College would like to extend its sincere thanks to their sponsor who has supported the team, Gooden’s – Construction and Concrete.
The company has generously funded the team jackets that will clearly identify the riders.
The students say they are proud to wear their team uniform and represent the college.
