Taryn Kelly’s remarkable journey
Ararat Eagles A-Grade netball defender Taryn Kelly took home the Mininera District Netball League best and fairest by one vote on Tuesday night, capping off a remarkable journey, having only given birth to her son, Bobby, on January 9.
Kelly said she pushed herself to be ready for round one following the birth and was surprised she won the award.
“I pushed myself hard at the start of the year, and probably pushed myself a bit too early on, but I got through it and made it to round one, and it was very humbling to be able to get back to pre-baby fitness as the year went on,” Kelly said.
“To win the best and fairest was unexpected, as I didn’t think I would get back to this level so quickly, and it’s a good feeling.”
This year, Kelly played with her sister, Emily, for the first time, who she coaches in the 18-and-under, and the duo formed a tremendous partnership in defence for the Eagles.
“It was a good experience to play alongside Emily,” Kelly said.
“I knew it would come at some point in our lifetime but didn’t know it would come so soon. We can talk to each other in ways you don’t talk to other people.”
What is more special about the win is that Emily won the 18-and-under best and fairest, polling 42 votes out of a possible 45.
Taryn’s focus has turned to this week, in their preliminary final against Tatyoon. Last year, Taryn played in Ararat’s premiership when she was 24 weeks pregnant, and it would be special to win another premiership.
Her attention also turns to coaching, with the 18-and-under team also playing Tatyoon for a place in the grand final.
