There was much laughter in the Willaura Hall recently when ‘The Town Criers’ visited to present a show about the communities of Moyston and Willaura.
Well known media personalities, Kirsten Diprose and Damian Callinan, volunteered their time to present stories, interviews and often quirky insights into both towns.
The event was organised to bring some cheer to the district after the Yarram Gap fires and to recognise and thank BlazeAid volunteers for all that’s been done to assist afterwards.
Highlights of the evening included interviews with the Willaura school children, who explained to Mayor Jo Armstrong what they’d do if they had her job for a day. Responses included a four-day weekends, riding motor bikes to school, fixing potholes and looking after the elderly, although not all could be readily agreed to.
The crowd also heard about Moyston’s ‘home of football’ claim from Bryan Kennedy and Moyston’s long running sheep dog trials from Max McLean.
Popular local businessowners, Julieann Rose and Peter Sporton, told a little of their life stories and what brought them to the district.
Willaura Primary School Principal Elissa Keilar, who has a foot in both camps, spoke of how much she enjoyed both communities.
Damian Callinan gave (questionable) tourism advice and Kirsten Diprose took a dive into local history, with all accounts bringing much laughter from the audience.
Another highlight of the evening was hearing from Blazeaid founder, Kevin Butler, who described how the organisation began, and along with volunteers present, was warmly applauded.
The night concluded with an auction and the drawing of raffle prizes donated by local business, and over $1,500 was raised for Blazeaid.
