Warriors can’t get enough of Muriel’s cakes

A beloved member of the Stawell community was the talk of the town last week after her famous sponge cakes sparked a surprise bidding war during an auction at Stawell Warriors Football and Netball Club’s ‘Super Saturday’ event on August 9.

A pair of Muriel Hart's famous sponge cakes were a hot item at Stawell Warriors Football and Netball Club's Super Saturday fundraising auction on August 9.

91-year-old Muriel Hart is renowned for her cooking prowess and often bakes a few cakes and eclairs for the footy club’s home games, so Warriors players and supporters have known for a long time just how special her cakes are.

When asked if she’d like to include a few sponge cakes in the club’s fundraising auction, she graciously said yes but no-one had any idea the cakes would become a sought-after hit.

Warriors club secretary Debbie Hart, Muriel’s daughter-in-law, said that at first the cakes were considered a nice way to add a little bit of value to a voucher that was included in the auction.

“We grouped the sponges with a voucher from the Tabaret because we had a lot of different auction items,” Debbie said, “So the Taberet voucher was for $100 and we bundled it with two of Muriel’s sponges.”

“We thought if we get $100 for it, we would be happy because that’s what the value of the voucher was, if we had of put the cakes separately, we would have been happy with about $20.”

When the auction came around, Muriel was shocked and flattered to see the price soar for the voucher and cake bundle, which Debbie said exceeded all expectations.

“A few people had come up to me and said they were going to bid on Muriel’s sponges because they all love her sponges and of course when it came up, we couldn’t believe it because they went up to $250,” Debbie said.

“The voucher was worth $100 so more or less, her sponges have gone for $150, so Muriel was fairly well chuffed.”

The whole event was a huge success for the club, with a great turn out for the president’s lunch and past player’s day which included an appearance by Collingwood football legend Peter Daicos, followed by a goods and services auction that featured a huge array of donated items from sponsors and supporters of the club.
