Warriors netballers still in the hunt

Stawell Warriors’ netballers had mixed results in the first week of finals in the Wimmera Football Netball League, with the best result the under-13 netballers rallying from a deficit to defeat the Horsham Saints by one goal in their qualifying final at Dimboola Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

Trailing by four goals at three-quarter time, the Warriors stormed home to win 34-33. Rahni Collins scored 24 goals, while Milla Freeland scored 10 in the win.   

Mia Bailey was best-on-court with her work as the goalkeeper, and Violet Baum was brilliant at wing attack.   

They now play Horsham Demons at Minyip Recreation Reserve for a spot in the grand final. Lose, and they play the winner out of Horsham Saints and Southern Mallee Thunder the following week.   

The 15-and-under netballers lost their qualifying final to Horsham Demons by two goals at Dimboola Recreation Reserve following an amazing comeback.  

The Warriors trailed by eight at three-quarter time and finished fast, but the lead was too big to peg back, losing 30-32.  

Matilda Egan scored 24 goals, while Ruby Nicholson scored six. Olivia Hunter was named best for her work in the midcourt.   

They now play the Warrack Eagles at Alexandra Oval on Sunday, with the winner to play the loser out of Horsham Saints and Horsham Demons for a place in the grand final.  

The 17-and-under netballers lost their elimination final to Ararat by four goals at Davis Park on Sunday.

The Rats maintained consistency all through the match and repelled everything that was thrown at them by the Warriors, winning 35-31.  

Phoebe Segedinski scored 19 goals, while Alana Graveson scored eight and Sophie Birch scored four.   

The B-Grade netballers lost their elimination final to Minyip Murtoa by five goals at Davis Park.   

Samantha Cook scored 25 goals, and Molly Orr scored 13. Jade Cross was named their best player with a solid game at wing attack.  

The C-Grade netballers overcame a tight first half to defeat Dimboola by six goals in their elimination final at Davis Park.   

Dimboola came into the match as favourites, but the Warriors scored 15 goals to 10 in the second half to run out 27-21 winners.   

Larni Gooden scored 21 goals, with Kristy Ainley scoring six. They will now play Warrack Eagles at Alexandra Oval on Sunday for a spot in the preliminary final.   

The C-Reserve, after finishing top of the ladder undefeated, had the week off and will now play the Horsham Saints at Minyip Recreation Reserve on Saturday for a spot in the grand final. The loser will play Warrack Eagles or Minyip Murtoa in the preliminary final.
